About Esther
Early inspiration
Esther has been an artist since childhood, getting her first taste of being an artist when her work was entered into a competition across Edinburgh. Early inspirations came from visits to the Museum of Modern Art housed in the Edinburgh Botanical Gardens. Here she would sit for hours looking at works by Pablo Picasso, Salvadore Dali, Marc Chagall, their bold colours and abstract variations leaving a lasting impression.
More About Esther
Experience
As a practicing artist for over 45 years, Esther has produced and sold a great deal of artwork in that time. While, largely self-taught she also studied with some exceptional teachers to achieve her own particular style.
Today Esther creates paintings of Scotland’s magnificent & varied landscapes through encaustic artwork, constantly feeding her taste for the abstract.
“I love the bright bold colours that are woven through my work and I love seeing what evolves out of the marks I make.”
For over 6 years she has been producing encaustic artworks. Yet, she has a wealth of experience working with oils on canvas, and later acrylics on canvas. Previous subjects were the standing stones, seascapes, landscapes throughout Scotland, of which there are many, together with a little conceptual art.
Esther has also carried out commissions of Individuals, Hotels & Field Centres.
Encaustic Art
What does it mean?
Encaustic art is created with beeswax with colour pigment added. It is made into different colour blocks which is then heated by using various tools. Each card, each mounted artwork, is unique, you cannot replicate them as the heated tools would rework the existing design.
This results in very bold abstract work. Many people have said how much they enjoy finding different images within their paintings each time they look at them. The reason Esther doesn’t name her pieces is because she believes it is in ‘the eye of the beholder’.
